· Skijoring (Winter and Spring)

Originally a means of Siberian and Nordic winter transportation, equestrian skijoring has evolved into a competitive sport in Montana. The image of a team of sled dogs mushing along blue-tinted, snowy ridges with silent, shrouded mountains in the background pulls at the heartstrings of every romantic outdoors person. · Team Penning (Year Round)

In the real-world lives of cowgirls and cowboys, cows and calves must be sorted and penned; it's a fact of ranch life. It's real life cowpoke fun too. Team penning on horseback is a fast-paced, hands-on, timed event, where a team of guests/cowhands separate individual calves from the herd and move those calves to their separate pens. Any level of horsemanship can do the job, but by the end of the event horse, rider and calf will savor the rewarding glow of accomplishment. (Price: $150 per person.)

· Klicks for Chicks 2012 (November 1-5, November 8-12 and November 15-19)

In November 2011, Triple Creek Ranch successfully hosted the 2nd annual Klicks for Chicks, an all-female equestrian adventure. In 2011, Klicks for Chicks benefited the “Summit for Parkinson’s,” a Montana based non-profit and sister-organization to the Brian Grant Foundation, dedicated to raising awareness, educating and inspiring those with Parkinson’s Disease. The event raised a total of $2,816 for the cause — one dollar for every kilometer ridden by participants—and the program's popularity has led to an expanded series of dates for the event in 2012. In the picture-book setting of the Bitterroot Mountains, guests are invited to participate in holiday celebrations, horseback riding, nature and birding tours, and cooking classes. Holiday weekends require a three-night minimum stay; all other programs can be scheduled for as many days as desired. 2011 rates begin at $750 per night, per couple.

Rates include all meals (breakfast, lunch, gourmet candlelight dinner), house wines and cocktails, snacks, unlimited use of the fitness center, and all ranch activities (on-ranch trail rides, ice fishing, guided nature tours, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing).

• Cooking School Weekends – January 14-15, 2011 and February 18-19, 2011 -- Guests roll up their sleeves for a hands-on, in-the-kitchen experience with the ranch’s executive chef and culinary team. From wine pairing to dessert prep to basic technique, the Cooking School weekends showcase Triple Creek Ranch’s commitment to the culinary arts. The school includes morning and afternoon sessions.

2010 STEELHEAD RUN MAY BE THE SECOND HIGHEST ON RECORD

OCTOBER, 2010 promises to be one of the best on record for the Steelhead run on the Salmon River. Fisherman and fisherwomen, young or old, expert to novice will enjoy catching this feisty fish. Steelheads are commonly known as rainbow trout. The term steelhead is used to differentiate between those rainbows that stay in fresh water and those that go out to sea. Both rainbow and steelhead trout return to the place where they hatched in order to spawn but, unlike their Pacific salmon cousins, steelheads and rainbows can spawn numerous times, where salmon make their journey only once.

Color can be another significant difference between steelhead and rainbow trout. Rainbows keep the colorful stripe down their sides, while steelhead lose their luminescent marking when going out to sea. Living in saltwater also allows the steelhead to grow much larger than its counterpart, 20 - 40 inches in length and up to 42 pounds verses 12 - 36 inch norm for the fresh water rainbows. Female steelheads are less colorful and have mouths that closely resemble a trout where males or bucks have a longer hook-like snout similar to a coho salmon.

On the Salmon River the fish come in cold weather, usually the third and fourth week of October. Spawning times for the Salmon River are late October through mid to late April. Hot spawning time is usally December through March.

Both fish are prized by fishermen and fisherwomen as big fighters when hooked; they begin to jump almost immediately and landing one on a fly-rod is quite a thrill. This is what our guides at 'Rawhide Outfitters' have to say, "This past fall 2009 steelhead run was one of the largest on record. These large steelhead numbers are arriving here on the upper Salmon River. Fly-fishing steelheaders will have a great time, as these fish stack up on the gravel bars and channels. The hatchery steelhead returns have been very successful with a strong native run as well. We use dory-type drift boats equipped with heaters. All methods of steelhead fishing techniques are used, but primarily we like back trolling plugs or bait and steelhead fly fishing, depending upon the preference and skill level of our fishing clients. A fisherman sized lunch is prepared homemade, hot and very tasty. Steelhead fishing on the Salmon river is truly an unforgettable experience!"

In preparation for its May 1 reopening, Triple Creek Ranch, the acclaimed Montana Relais & Chateaux resort, has put the finishing touches on a thoughtfully conceived makeover that demonstrates its affinity for the art and culture of the American West. Further refining the Ranch's rustic yet elegant appeal, the resort drew on the skills of local artisans and craftsmen to renovate and redecorate 18 luxury cabins and introduce updates to its acclaimed dining room. Cabins now feature new fireplaces, new furnishings and original pieces of art from owners and collectors Barbara and Craig Barrett's western-genre collection. Works by grand masters such as Charles Russell and Frederick Remington and contemporary artists such as Carol Hagan, Brent Cotton and photographer David Stoecklein create an overall atmosphere infused with the spirit of the West, showcasing the essence of Montana both indoors and out. In addition to their new locations inside the cabins, the work of more than one hundred western genre artists is on display with sculptures, paintings and photographs throughout the ranch.

In the cabins, a natural color palette for walls, countertops, bedspreads and floors was chosen in order to create a subdued backdrop to best showcase the new original artwork. In addition, one-of-a-kind regional furnishings and handicrafts, including lodge pole pine doors, wine barrel vanity chairs, hand knotted oriental rugs, Lewis & Clark woolen afghans and hand-crafted slab granite countertops and oak desk tops, were added. The ranch turned to local hat maker (who doubles as an on-Ranch housekeeper) to make the linen, microsuede and cotton window treatments, trimmed with decorative buttons made by a local craftswoman who learned the art of bead weaving and jewelry making on the nearby Flathead Reservation.

To complement the refreshed interiors, a stately new sign, made by local stone mason Justin Anderson, stands at Triple Creek Ranch's entrance. Fashioned from Craig Barrett's rough drawing on a cocktail napkin, it is a fitting architectural capstone to the ranch. The sixteen foot high stone structure signals a "welcome home" to guests returning to the Bitterroot Mountains resort.

In the warm and romantic dining room, where guests regularly linger over gourmet dinners, a redesign creates a setting where the beautiful outdoor views take center stage. New wood floors are complemented by new custom-designed leather dining chairs, exclusive to Triple Creek Ranch, that are both rustic and comfortable.

Triple Creek Ranch has long been a favorite destination fo travelers who appreciate art as well as the great outdoors. Triple Creek Ranch, the acclaimed Montana Relais & Chateaux resort, introduces two back-to-back Photography Workshop Weekends, scheduled June 4 - 7 and June 10 - 13, 2010. Third Annual Spring Roundup

Triple Creek Ranch's popular Round-up puts guests into a cowboy frame of mind as they learn about horses, move and brand cattle, and experience first hand the excitement of a rodeo.

Scheduled May 2 - 6, the action packed five day/four night Spring Round-up package includes a day of learning cowboy basics, a day for branding and a rodeo day. Seventh Annual Spring Vintners Series

Triple Creek Ranch's Seventh Annual Spring Vintners Series runs May through June, with an award-winning winery showcased on each of four weekends. Each weekend includes wine tastings with visiting vintners, wine pairing dinners, plus outdoor and indoor activities ranging from fly-fishing and horseback riding to couple's massages. The four-day/three night program dates are May 14-17, 20-23, and June 3-6, 2010.
